Backchecking - When a forward returns quickly to his own zone to protect the goal.
Board check - To bodycheck an opponent into the boards.
Bodycheck - To block the puck carrier (or an opponent going for the puck) by hitting him from the front or side (and above the knees) with the upper part of the body.
Breakaway - Drive in which one or more offensive players are moving in on the goal with fewer defenders than attackers.
Butterfly goalie - A goalkeeper who attempts to stop most shots while dropping to the ice, rather than standing up.
Charging - Taking more than two strides before running into an opponent.
Changing on the fly - Substituting players while the puck is in play.
Checking - Using your hip or shoulder to slow or stop an opponent in an attempt to gain control of the puck.
Cross-check - To hit an opponent illegally with the stick held by both hands in front of the body.
Faceoff - When the referees put the puck into play by dropping it between two players who then try to gain possession.
Forechecking - Hustling in the opponent's zone by the forwards who want to keep the puck there and hopefully take it away.
Freezing the puck - Using sticks or skates to pin the puck against the board.
Goal Crease - The blue area in front of the goal.
Hat trick - Scoring of three goals by an individual player in a single game.
Head-manning - To pass the puck to a teammate closer to the opponent's goal during a rush.
High-sticking - Carrying the stick above the permissible height or injuring an opponent with a high stick.
Icing - Shooting a puck from within the defensive zone (half in pro play) of the ice across the opponents' goal line, when play is picked up by an opponent other than the goalie.
Interference - Checking or hampering an opponent who is not in possession of the puck or is not attempting to gain possession.
Offside pass - Illegal pass made from the defensive zone to a player in the neutral zone across the red line.
Penalty - Suspension for foul play for two (minor penalty), five (major penalty), or ten (misconduct penalty) minutes or for the remainder of the game (match penalty).
Penalty killer - Player assigned by a shorthanded team to defend against the power play.
Penalty shot - Unhindered shot at the goal (defended only by the goalie), awarded for certain infractions by the opponent. The puck is dead after the shot.
Point - An offensive position just inside the blue line usually taken by defensemen when their team is in control of the puck on the other end of the rink.
Poke check - Hitting the puck away from the puck carrier by poking, hooking, or sweeping the puck free.
Power play - Situation in which one team has more players on the ice than the other (because of a penalty) and attacks.
Screen shot - A shot the goalie can't see because one or more players id blocking his view.
Slap shot - Hard, swinging stroke in which the stick blade hits the ice just behind the puck.
Slashing - Swinging the stick at an opponent.
Spearing - Jabbing an opponent with the point of the stick blade or the head of the stick.
Standup goalie - A goalkeeper who attempts to stop most shots while standing up, rather than by dropping to the ice.
